Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez's current relationship status—or at least the buzz surrounding it—is changing nearly by the minute with rumors of meet-ups, makeups and the ultimate breakup all cluttering the gossip columns. So it's really no surprise the "Boyfriend" singer didn't acknowledge Gomez when he scored three major trophies at the 40th anniversary of the American Music Awards on Sunday, Nov. 18. But the real reason the teen dream didn't say her name may be a bit more shocking.
Bieber's choice to leave Gomez out of his laundry list of "thank-yous" when he took to the stage to accept the Favorite Pop/Rock Album, the Favorite Pop/Rock Male Artist and the Artist of the Year awards apparently had nothing to do with their alleged split or their recent lovers' quarrels; it was all business!
"He really wanted Selena to be there with him [at the AMAs]. Justin wanted to thank Selena in his acceptance speeches, but was advised not to bring up his personal life," an insider close to Bieber has revealed, as Hollywood Life reports.
Instead, Bieber focused on the other major female in his life: his adorable mom, Pattie Mallette. He even brought her on stage for his biggest win of the night, the Artist of the Year. That said, his acceptance speech—specifically for that award—came across as a bit disjointed with the Biebs fumbling for words and stuttering quite a bit. Perhaps he was self-monitoring himself so much to try and not say anything about Gomez that it was cramping his style.
Although he was allegedly advised against mentioning Selena Gomez so as not to attract attention away from his music, Justin Bieber may have had the last laugh. He opted to leave the "Selena" line in the lyrics of his new "Beauty and the Beat" song, which he performed with pint-sized rapper Nicki Minaj. Oh, and he was also rumored to have left the American Music Awards with another trophy: Gomez herself. The maybe on-again couple was spotted holding hands and hanging out after the show.
