People who chortle or (pretend to) cringe at the idea of Justin Bieber as a contender for the Fifty Shades of Grey movie's coveted titular role should check their facts. Selena Gomez's ex just clobbered every other famous name on a list of the most Googled Christian Grey contenders.
Beliebers who are hoping to behold their idol strutting his superstar stuff as kinky billionaire Christian Grey in the movie version of E. L. James' mommie porn trilogy can now rejoice and even gloat a little. It seems the now adult Biebs garners more online searches per month than a slew of other top male celebrities—including his fellow Christian Grey contenders. Way more.
Although Henry Cavill may be faster than a speeding bullet in his Superman incarnation, he isn't quick enough to catch up to the Biebs. He placed sixth behind the "As Long As You Love Me" singer with a measly 368,000 searches per month. True Blood's Alexander Skarsgaard, who has actively and unabashedly declared his interest in the role, placed fifth with 450,000. Controversial contender and former frontrunner, Matt Bomer took fourth place with 823,000 monthly searches, only to be bested by Kristen Stewart's Snow White and the Huntsman costar, Chris Hemsworth whose third place total was an even million. And second to Justin was the acknowledged (former?) frontrunner, Ian Somerhalder. The Vampire Diaries star inspires an impressive 1,830,000 a month. But even with nearly two million monthly searches under his belt, Somerhalder was still left face down in the dust. The teen idol of the millennium's Google search total was 30,400,000 per month. That's right—more than the other five contenders combined.
Ouch.
So there you have it. Of course, there's no way to tell why more than 30 million people Google Justin Bieber's name each month. But it really doesn't matter. What matters is that the kid commands an unbelievably huge fan base—even greater than Robert Pattinson's or the boys of One Direction. If he were to win the coveted role of Christian Grey, he would bring that fan base to the movie with him. Of course, some of his detractors would probably show up hoping to see him fall on his face. But hey, a ticket purchased is money in the bank regardless of the motivation behind it.
In the end, whether Justin Bieber could make a convincing Christian Grey is probably an academic question. In fact, it's irrelevant. His name and fame alone will have crowds sleeping on sidewalks all over the world waiting for the box office to open. It happens at his concerts. Why wouldn't it work for Fifty Shades of Grey?
What do you think?
Note: Unfortunately, some beliebers in some countries, like the U.S., might be too young to get in to see 50 Shades of Grey. Oops
