While he didn't stand a chance of winning, it seems Donald Trump really was considering a presidential run in 2012. That is, until NBC talked the real estate tycoon out of it. Granted, his decision not to run made a lot of conservatives unhappy. However, Trump likely didn't have a broad enough backing to gain the nomination. So maybe NBC's decision to talk their Celebrity Apprentice developer out of running was a good thing.
A lot of people assumed the Donald was just blowing hot air. He did a lot of that last year, challenging Barack Obama's legitimacy as a U.S. citizen. Many assumed Trump was just doing what he usually does which is gaining publicity in any way possible. So they dismissed his threats of a presidential run as just manic mumbling. As it turns out, Trump might have been very close to throwing his hat in the ring for real. That's if what NBC chairman, Robert Greenblatt can be believed.
"We talked him out of running for president...." he told a group of reporters. Although he was joking somewhat, maybe not completely. His response was to questions about NBC's stance about some of the Donald's questionable comments last year. One reporter even wanted to know if they ever considered stepping in to muzzle their star.
"We live in this country where you can sort of say anything you want as long as you're not harming people," Greenblatt noted. Donald's "got a political belief system and we talk to him all the time," he went on. "...That said, if he sort of becomes somehow hurtful or says or does things that cross a line, I guess we would figure out what to do about that."
Greenblatt's remarks sound like a warning shot across Donald Trump's bow.
