Actor Dean Cain was once engaged to Mindy McCready. He wasn't surprised by her recent suicide, but says her problems were mostly self-inflicted--the result of living a life of manipulation and lies.
According to a report from People.com, McCready didn't have the drug and alcohol issues that plagued her in recent years when she and Cain were engaged. Their relationship began in 1997. Their engagement only lasted a year.
The day after McCready died, Cain--who played the starring role in the TV show Lois & Clark--was asked to shed some light on their relationship.
"I can't paint too pretty a picture. She would start arguments, start drama. Things weren't allowed to be good," he said.
"She was never abusive or addictive with me, but red flags were everywhere," he says. "I saw all the bad signs and told her to get out."
At the end of their relationship, Cain said he left his own home and stayed in a hotel to escape her. "Everything she did was a manipulation of sorts. She would just get combative."
How sad that Mindy McCready's past was riddled with lies and manipulation. It sounds as though some sort of need that lingered deep within her was never met. Perhaps her lies caught up with her and she learned she couldn't manipulate every situation or everyone. Might that have been when she turned to drugs and alcohol to calm her demons?
Kudos to Dean Cain for being honest in his interview. Some folks would paint a kinder picture out of respect for the deceased, but by honestly pointing out McCready's dark side maybe someone else will recognize themselves in his description and get help long before it's too late.
