As the Fifty Shades of Grey casting wars go on and on, seemingly ad infinitum, the competition becomes understandably more intense. This is especially true when it comes to the question of who will garner the most coveted acting job of the millennium--Christian Grey. Henry Cavill is reportedly actively gunning for the part by wearing Mr. Grey's signature grey tie. Vampire Diaries heart-throb, Ian Somerhalder is playing it a bit more subtly by making cryptic remarks about "rehearsals and auditions" thereby implying that he may have already been chosen. Sad as it may seem for his fans, he has not been chosen--yet. No one has. So, it seems the playing field is still open, and theoretically at least, it's still level. Recently, a new possible contender seems to have decided to take a more direct approach to pursuing the role. The other Twilight heart-throb, Taylor Lautner was spotted and photographed hanging out with E.L. James at the Grey Goose Pre-Oscar Party. (Grey Goose, get it?) Does he, too, want to play Mr. Grey?
In the photo which you can see by clicking here, Lautner and James seem friendly enough. The question is: Was this just a routine celebrity photo-op, or did TLaut and the mommie porn multi-millionairess actually have something to talk about besides how preternaturally blessed they both are?
Unfortunately, only Lautner and James know for sure. However, a more intriguing question is: Could Taylor Lautner make a convincing Christian Grey? Well, that too is problematic. His post Twilight Saga starring vehicle, Abduction, flopped like a soggy potato chip. And he hasn't done much since. Furthermore, having just turned 21, TLaut has the opposite problem of 50 Shades contenders like Matt Bomer and Peter Skarsgaard who are often considered too old to play the 28-year-old sadist. Lastly, E.L. James has often stated publicly that she does not want Robert Pattinson and/or Kristen Stewart anywhere near the Fifty Shades of Grey movie because of their connection to Twilight Saga. Whether this ban would also apply to Taylor Lautner is unknown.
On the other hand, Taylor Lautner is spectacularly beautiful--especially when he's in super buff shape. And, to paraphrase Marilyn Monroe's Lorelei Lee in Gentlemen Prefer Blondes: "Beauty may not be everything, but, my goodness, it certainly helps."
A compromise mentioned on the fan sites several months ago, would be to cast Lautner as the teenage Christian Grey who is introduced to the BDSM scene by sexy cougar dominatrix, Elena Lincoln AKA Mrs. Robinson. And why not? It would give his seemingly moribund career the boost it obviously needs. He'd probably be good at it. And he'd certainly look the part.
